Partnering for Better Accountability and Increased Capacity

In 2011, MCF member Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation provided funding for the Charities Review Council, so it could work with the foundation’s current grantees, assessing the nonprofits’ readiness to meet Charities Review Council standards and improving their competitiveness when applying for future funds.

The project turned into a win-win-win.

  • More than 20 nonprofits — many of them new and immigrant-led organizations — completed or are progressing along the path toward earning the Meets Standards seal.
  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation provided funding and technical assistance, and believes the nonprofits are better able to help create healthy communities and meet future challenges as a result.
  • The Charities Review Council became a more culturally affirming and inclusive organization and helped a number of nonprofits build capacity, both of which align with its strategic goals.
