Women’s Foundation To Invest In NW Minnesota

August 5, 2008

The Women’s Foundation of Minnesota will award a minimum of $30,000 in grants to communities in Northwest Minnesota this year in order to increase its investment in that region of the state. The foundation is seeking proposals from nonprofit groups, programs and projects that serve women and girls; the proposals must focus on either creating economic justice for women and girls or advancing women’s safety and security. The average grant will be between $5,000 and $20,000 and last for one year.

“As a statewide community foundation, we strive to partner with organizations from every county in Minnesota to grow equality and opportunities for women and girls in their own communities,” said Lee Roper-Batker, foundation president and CEO. “We are truly excited for the opportunity to partner with nonprofits in these 12 counties to create pathways for women and girls — and families — to thrive economically, and to help make these communities a safer place for its women and girls.”

Eligible applicants must be located in one or more of the following 12 counties: Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Roseau.

The grant application deadline is Sept. 1, 2008. The application form and further details can be found at wfmn.org. For questions, or to be mailed the grant application and details, contact Sida Ly-Xiong, the associate director of evaluation and research, at 612.236.1803, 888.337.5010, or sida@wfmn.org.

I had the opportunity to serve on a Web 2.0 panel last week at the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers’ annual conference in Minneapolis. We talked about how grantmaker membership organizations, like MCF, can use tools such as blogs, wikis and social networking. This blog was one of the examples, along with MCF member West Central Initiative’s West Central Blogger and West Central News. Northern California Grantmakers is probably the regional association that is using these tools the most, with a blog, wikis, RSS feeds, and maybe even more.

Of course, there wasn’t enough time to talk about all the possibilities or give all of our advice — so here are some of my tips for how regional association staff can find time and content to create and maintain a blog.
