MCF grantmaker programs for April and May have just been announced. In the popular Effective Grantmaking Series, Life of a Grant Proposal will give newer grantmakers an opportunity to learn good practices in grant review from seasoned professionals. A new three-part series for family philanthropists — Money Sanity U: A Family Affair — features Nathan Dungan, one of the top national experts on families, values and money. There’s also a followup on a popular Youth Homelessness Dialogue and several network meetings.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to participate in the F1 Web Challenge. According to organizer Sierra Bravo, the contest “provides a fun forum to highlight creative ways for nonprofits to strategically use web technology to accomplish their missions.” I came away very tired but with lots of ideas and tips for creating a new website. New Leader at Otto Bremer Foundation

Randi Ilyse Roth was named executive director of Otto Bremer Foundation, effective May 1. Roth succeeds John Kostishack, who retired at the end of 2007 after 28 years with the organization. Roth currently serves as the independent, court-appointed monitor in a civil rights lawsuit brought by African-American farmers against the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Prior to that, she served as a staff attorney and then as executive director of the Farmers’ Legal Action Group. Welcome, Randi!
Oprah’s Big Give

Anyone watch Oprah’s Big Give last night? This latest entry into the reality TV genre has been described as “philanthropy meets Survivor.” Ten contestants compete with only one rule: YOU EITHER GIVE BIG OR YOU GO HOME.
