Authors of a new book, Seen But Not Heard: Strengthening Nonprofit Advocacy, want charities to participate in advocacy in order to advance their missions.

But the idea of “advocacy” or “lobbying” makes some charities nervous — even though advocacy, or public policy, is much more than just lobbying. There is a whole range of activities that foundations, both public and private, can participate in to advance their individual missions and the common good.

The McKnight Foundation announced its 2007 Virginia McKnight Binger Awards in Human Service. Ten Minnesotans were honored for giving their time to help people in their communities and will each receive $7,500.

National Philanthropy Day is a day set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the contributions that philanthropy and philanthropists have made to our lives, our communities and our world.

This year, the 22nd anniversary, more than 125 communities and 50,000 people around the world will participate in celebrations such as award ceremonies, galas, luncheons, seminars and other special events. National Philanthropy Day is formally supported by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and hundreds of other nonprofit and for-profit organizations throughout North America.

MPR is looking for people who are willing to share their own stories for an upcoming In the Loop program, “Charity: What gives?” A couple questions to get you started: How do you decide where to give your money? How does religion influence your giving? Do you volunteer?
